How do I open a HSBC Direct Savings Account?
- There are three major steps involved in opening a HSBC Direct Savings Account.
First, visit the HSBC Direct website (www.hsbcdirect.co.kr) and click on the “Apply Now” button.
Fill in the online registration form and set your Internet Banking user ID, Internet Banking Password and Phone Banking Password for future use.
Second, once your online registration is successfully processed, one of our HSBC Direct Banking Specialists will contact you before the end of the next working day to arrange an appointment for a Personal Identity Verification. After you complete the Personal Identity Verification with our HSBC Direct Banking Specialist, you will receive a Security Device. HSBC Direct Banking Specialist will only visit the service areas during service hours (Monday to Friday 9:00AM ~ 4:00PM)
To complete the account opening process, log in to the HSBC Direct website to register your Security Device and Digital Certificate by following the instructions. (The HSBC Direct Banking Specialist will let you know when you can log on to our website)
Once your HSBC Direct Savings Account is successfully opened, you can use other banks' ATMs and Internet Banking or Phone Banking services, or counter services to transfer money to your HSBC Direct Savings account.
Do I need to be an existing customer with HSBC before I can open an account at HSBC Direct?
- No, being an existing HSBC customer is not a requirement to open an account at HSBC Direct. To open a HSBC Direct Savings Account, visit the HSBC Direct website on www.hsbcdirect.co.kr and complete the online registration process. You can arrange one of our HSBC Direct Banking Specialist to visit you for a Personal Identity Verification at a time and location of your choice. Alternatively you can visit your nearest HSBC branch to conduct the Personal Identity Verification. After you successfully complete the Personal Identity Verification, log in to our website to complete the account opening process.
If I already have an account at HSBC, do I still need to open a new account at HSBC Direct?
- Yes. Since HSBC Direct is a direct banking service provided by HSBC, you still need to complete the online registration process at www.hsbcdirect.co.kr even if you are an existing customer at HSBC.
Who is eligible to open an HSBC Direct Savings Account?
- Anyone who has residency in Korea is eligible to open an HSBC Direct Savings Account. We do however require a guardian’s approval for applicants below age 14 according to the Act on Promotion of Information and Communication Network Utilization and Information Protection. Legal guardians will also be required to complete a Personal Identity Verification when closing the HSBC Direct Savings Account of their minor children.
Do I have to be a Korean to open an HSBC Direct Savings Account?
- No, you don’t have to be a Korean citizen, but you do need to have residency in Korea. To prove your residency status, you will need to show us your passport, Alien Registration Card or Domestic Residence Report Certificate.
Can I open an HSBC Direct Savings Account while overseas?
- Sorry you may not. You have to be in Korea in order to receive a Personal Identity Verification.

- Sorry, you may not. According to local banking regulatory requirements, we need to ensure that you are the true owner of your HSBC Direct Savings Account. To do that, we must meet you in person.
What documents do I need to bring along to the Personal Identity Verification appointment?
- You need to bring along your proof of identification such as National ID Card or driver’s license. Children under 14 years of age must obtain consent from one of their legal guardians. Guardians will need to bring along their ID card and Residence Registration Certificate to prove their relationship with the applicants.
How long does it take to complete the Personal Identity Verification process?
- It takes about 15 minutes to complete the process. After you fill in the Personal Identity Verification Form, the HSBC Direct Banking Specialist will scan your form and ID card and send the copies to the main office. When they receive confirmation that the transmission has been successful, you will receive a Security Device. How can I make sure that the person who is visiting to conduct the Personal Identity Verification is really an HSBC Direct Banking Specialist?
- After initial online registration, our HSBC Direct Banking Specialist will personally call you to let you know the time, location of the appointment as well as his/her name. During the visit, they will be wearing an HSBC Direct Photo Identity Card as well as carry corresponding business cards. How can I check my account opening process?
- Upon successful completion of each step required for opening an HSBC Direct Savings Account (Online Registration → Personal Identity Verification → Activate Account), we will send you a confirmation mail to the e-mail address you have entered during Online Registration. If you do not receive a confirmation mail, please contact the HSBC Direct Call Center to verify your status as well as to update your email address.
